AMOA-Arthouse internships are ideal for expanding one’s understanding of the functions of contemporary art spaces and non-profit organizations, as well as a great way to become an active part of the visual arts community in Austin.

Internships are organized into fall, spring, and summer sessions at both of our locations. All applicants applying for a position should send a cover letter, resume, and internship application form to Natalie Baker at nbaker@amoa-arthouse.org.

The following internships require a writing sample: Curatorial, Public Programs, and Communications. The writing sample should be no more than three pages in length.

Communications Internships

Social Media Internship

Social Media Interns compose Facebook posts, live tweet at select AMOA-Arthouse events, and help manage the museum’s blog. This internship provides many opportunities to brainstorm new ways to engage the public and foster a dialogue with museumgoers via social media. This internship is located at the Jones Center and requires a writing sample of no more than three pages in length (preferred content includes example Facebook posts, tweets, and social media campaign strategies).

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• Candidates must have familiarity with all social media platforms, including Facebook,  Twitter, and Vimeo, as well as URL shortening service Bitly
• Ideal candidates will possess strong writing skills and be familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style
• Preference will be given to Junior or Senior-level individuals
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop and photo re-sizing required
• Interest or background in contemporary art a plus

Marketing & PR Internship

Marketing & PR Interns perform such tasks as: creating and updating media lists, coordinating research projects, tracking and clipping news coverage, writing and editing press materials, distributing news releases, assembling media kits, and various administrative duties. Other opportunities for involvement could include assisting with advertising and marketing collateral production schedules. This internship is located at the Jones Center and requires a writing sample of no more than three pages in length (preferred writing samples will be press release or media alert drafts of upcoming exhibitions or events at the museum).

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• Ideal candidates will have had several public relations classes, possess strong writing skills, and be familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style
• Preference will be given to Junior or Senior-level individuals
• Photography skills, interest in contemporary art, and experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign a plus

Graphic Design Internship

AMOA-Arthouse is looking for an upper-level student intern who is creative, reliable, has excellent attention to detail, and has a proficient knowledge of print and web design software (mainly the Adobe Creative Suite). This internship is located at the Jones Center.

We require 15-20 hours per week and will work around school schedules. The intern will work one-on-one with the lead designer to complete projects ranging from ad design, museum printed materials and signage to digital newsletters and web design. This internship is NOT an errand-running, coffee-making or studio-cleaning internship, so come ready to produce real-world work. Candidates are required to submit a resume and at least five samples of previous work.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• A creative thinker with a strong interest in contemporary art, issues, and visual culture
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently
• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite

Photography Internship

The Photography Intern will assist the Communications department in photographing events and artworks, editing photos for print as needed, and organizing the museum’s archive. This position provides the opportunity to work under art direction in order to capture the essence of the museum and strengthen one’s portfolio by working events hosted by AMOA-Arthouse and attended by donors, patrons, and artists. This position is located at the Jones Center, with occasional visits to Laguna Gloria for events. Weekly in-office hours and attendance at events will be expected. Candidates are required to submit examples of previous work with the application.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• Should have experience with event photography and lighting
• Must be enrolled in a photography or related visual media program
• Experience editing photos for print and online as needed
• Previous skills using Adobe Suite required
• Interns must bring their own equipment

Development/Membership Internship

The Development/Membership Intern at AMOA-Arthouse provides needed assistance with the implementation of key development strategies and programs, supporting existing staff in the maintenance and growth of AMOA-Arthouse’s membership, earned income opportunities, and special events. This position offers unique insight into the overall operations of nonprofit membership and development operations. This internship is located at the Jones Center.

Responsibilities include maintaining current membership information for visitors as well as facilitating membership communications, renewal mailings and member solicitation efforts. The development intern will also be involved in the execution of AMOA-Arthouse exhibition openings and special events, and will work closely with AMOA-Arthouse staff in all aspects of their work. Some evenings are required for exhibition openings and special events.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• Strong organizational and communication skills with an attention to detail
• Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Database Management
• Basic understanding of the web, use of web services and low level web technologies
• Interest in/knowledge of contemporary art a plus
• Minor experience with the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, etc.) a plus

Public Programs Internship

The Public Programs Intern works closely with our curatorial team and performs a variety of tasks related to exhibitions and AMOA-Arthouse programs. Such tasks include online and library research, gallery email inquiries, relevant off-site visits, attendance at all AMOA-Arthouse-related programs and events, and organizing artists’ applications for the AMOA-Arthouse Visiting Lecturer Series. This internship is located at the Jones Center. This internship requires a writing sample of no more than three pages in length.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• Have a strong academic background in art history and a devoted interest in contemporary art, issues, and visual culture
• A creative thinker with an attention to detail and strong organizational, writing, and computer skills are required
• Experience with or interest in programming and curating
• Ability to work Thursday evenings during AMOA-Arthouse programs
• Knowledge of Austin’s visual art scene a plus

Curatorial Internship

The Curatorial Intern works closely with our curators to perform a wide variety of duties related to exhibitions. Interns conduct library and online research on artists and assigned topics, maintain artist files, request information from national and international galleries, draft artist correspondence, respond to public inquiries, write educational and didactic materials, file, copy, and complete general administrative tasks as needed.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• A strong academic background in art history and a devoted interest in contemporary art, issues, and visual culture.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational, writing, and computer skills.
• Prior museum or gallery experience is preferred.
• Preference is given to graduate students, but qualified undergraduates will be considered.

Visitor Services Internship

The Visitor Services Intern works directly with the Visitor Relations Manager, and performs a variety of roles directly related to AMOA-Arthouse’s visitorship and visitor relations, mainly functioning as the ambassador between AMOA-Arthouse and the public. The Visitor Relations Intern will help track visitor demographics, work at the front desk, sell memberships and merchandise, and will provide a welcoming presence for visitors. This internship can be located at both the Jones Center and Laguna Gloria.

Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications:
• A creative thinker with a strong interest in contemporary art, issues, and visual culture
• Ability to articulate ideas and communicate well with a variety of personalities
• Work well under pressure and with deadlines
• Have daytime availability
• Multitask easily

Education Internships

We have different areas of education within the museum. Please read each education internship description when deciding on which area to apply for. Also, please keep in mind the different locations.

Teen Programs, Teacher Programs, Docents, and Tours Internship

Duties for this unpaid internship may include facilitating tour groups, assisting during teen program activities*, writing teacher resource materials, maintaining education and exhibition archives, compiling resources for docents, drafting correspondence, and researching educational initiatives. Internship requires a time commitment of 10-12 hours/week. This internship is located at the Jones Center.

• Available to undergraduate and graduate level studio art, art history, and art education students
• Must be self-motivated with the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously
• Proactive spirit, professional demeanor, and positive attitude
• Familiarity with a PC, MS Word and Excel, and email applications
• Ability to get to the Jones Center

*Teen program interns must be available Saturdays. Spanish speaking a plus.

Young Artists Teacher’s Assistant

The Young Artists Teacher’s Assistant works alongside the Young Artists instructor to co-teach a ten-week Saturday morning teen arts program. Applicants must have a strong interest in the arts and be open to a variety of educational approaches outside of the classroom. Responsibilities include working closely with the instructor to assist in the planning of program meetings, as well as leading demonstrations or discussions as necessary. The teacher’s assistant will gain firsthand teaching experience in a program of up to twenty students, as well as insight into the planning and implementation of weekly activities and field trips. Internship credit available. This internship is located at the Jones Center.

Prospective assistants should meet the following criteria:
• Graduate student in Art Education, Studio Art, or Art History preferred
• Previous experience in teaching not required, but a plus (high school not required, but a plus)
• Available every Saturday from 9am to 1pm for the duration of the ten-week semester program
• Availability to meet outside of the program as needed for planning
• Strong interest in contemporary art and visual culture
• Strong interest in developing connections with student needs
• Creative thinker
• Flexible

This position requires approximately 4-6 hours per week on Saturdays, depending on the length of the Saturday program meeting time and additional planning sessions.

Families and Community Programs Internship

Duties for this unpaid internship include assisting with community outreach, facilitating family art programs, art and exhibition research, and researching community program and educational initiatives. Internship requires a time commitment of 10-12 hours/week. This internship is located at Laguna Gloria.
• Available to undergraduate and graduate level art education, art history, and studio art students, as well as non-student applicants with art/education backgrounds
• Must be self-motivated with the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously
• Proactive spirit, professional demeanor, and positive attitude
• Familiarity with a PC, MS Word and Excel, and email applications
• Ability to get to Laguna Gloria

Art School Internship

Interns at The Art School assist through a variety of duties related to art education, day-to day operations of The Art School, the curriculum and programs, and its students and faculty. This internship is located at Laguna Gloria. Interns are expected to provide general administrative support to the Office to the Registrar, the Associate Director, and the Administrative Manager; assist faculty with digital instruction, computer lap upkeep, monitoring children’s digital classes, and general classroom management; and help staff with coordination of all classroom volunteers. Interns will learn about scheduling, managing a large volunteer database, and about the logistics of day-to-day operation.
